Close to Home…

IFC Israeli movie “Close to home” showed on TV today…opening scene reminded me of my last visit to Chicago… A woman in hijab stopped for routine inspection at the airport- clothes- over coat, jacket, skirt off, hijab; everything in your bag taken out and inspected….it’s demoralizing to watch and to be in the process…

Yes I am foreign, from the country of NY

Yes I speak with an accent, the Yankee twang

Yes I travel alone, I am an adult

Yes I had a purpose coming to Chicago, here for a graduation

Yes I bought gifts, souvenirs for family

Yes I wear makeup and perfume, for femininity and vanity.

Yes I have missed my flight, another long night in a plastic chair

Close to home, yet a million miles away…
