The Four Agreements

My husband found this book “A Toltec Wisdom Book – The Four Agreement” by Don Miguel Ruiz in our library that he thought I should put up on my blog. The discussion leading to getting the book out was for our daughters; who are having “teenage moments,” and he wanted to remind them of something important that they could relate with.

Teenagers go through a whole host of moods, peer pressure, angst and anything else you want to throw in the pot. We have tried as parents to give them a well-rounded view of thoughts and ideas beyond what we as Muslims are- they live in a world that is not Muslim majority and we have always kept that in mind.

The gist of the book, based on these agreements- whether or not you believe in them- make sense and are powerful each in its own right

Be Impeccable with your word

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t Take Anything Personally

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dram. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you will not be victim of needless suffering.

Don’t Make Assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always Do Your Best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret

Let us hope it helps them live their lives better and more solidly…

Are they not beautiful statements? Imagine if we could just do these four agreements everyday…things would change for sure!

I know what the Haraam Police would have to say about us having the girls read this book; being Toltec- Native American Wisdom and all- but it suits our purposes and is a powerful way of bringing home some much needed attention to what they don’t see around them Muslim or Non.

I think we could all learn from it, especially those who would treat life so poorly, don’t you think?

Haraam police! God! Really I am so scared of them. Everyone should read it… except for the Haraam police of course 😀

The real question is would they understand that it has been said before- In Arabic- though of course not in a book of Toltec Wisdom? But the official ones they would make sure the book was never sold. Not to mention it has not one picture to black hand! LOL

Native American Indians have a rich nation of cultures- this is a nice example of it.
